Kindness

A simple act of kindness has a way of turning a bad day into a good day. It can be something little like a smile, a hug, opening the door for someone, or stepping up to help a person in need. A famous quote says, “Kindness, like a boomerang, always returns.” (Author Unknown)  The Bible has a lot to say about God’s kindness to us and how we should be kind to others.

Has God shown any kindness to me? More than you will ever know! It’s in the Bible, “But when the time came for the kindness and love of God our Savior to appear, then he saved us-not because we were good enough to be saved but because of his kindness and pity-by washing away our sins and giving us the new joy of the indwelling Holy Spirit, whom he poured out upon us with wonderful fullness-and all because of what Jesus Christ our Savior did so that he could declare us good in God's eyes-all because of his great kindness; and now we can share in the wealth of the eternal life he gives us, and we are eagerly looking forward to receiving it”( Titus 3:4-7, TLB).

How can I become a kind person? When Jesus lives in your heart, kindness comes out of your heart. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23, NIV).

What is the purpose of being kind? Should I be kind in order to get a reward? Random acts of kindness are like showing God to someone! You’ll find it in the Bible, "Love your enemies! Do good to them! Lend to them! And don't be concerned about the fact that they won’t repay. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as sons of God: for He is kind to the unthankful and to those who are very wicked."(Luke 6:35, TLB).

Remember, you do nice things for people because you love Jesus and want to be like Him, not to get a payback from people. Your reward is from God.

What about people who have been mean to me?  It’s in the Bible, "If someone mistreats you because you are a Christian, don’t curse him; pray that God will bless him. When others are happy, be happy with them. If they are sad, share their sorrow." (Romans 12:14, TLB). We are kind to others because God is kind to us.

Another famous quote says, “The best way to knock the chip off your neighbor’s shoulder is to pat him on the back” (Author Unknown). This is another way of saying that a kind deed will help change another person’s bad attitude.

Should all Christians be kind? Yes! It’s in the Bible, "Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" (Colossians 3:12, NIV).

Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.  ~Mark Twain
