Magic

Is it okay for a Christian to do magic tricks? The Bible teaches us that Christianity and magic don’t mix! Check it out in the Bible, Acts. 19:18,19, TLB. “Many of the believers who had been practicing magic confessed their deeds and brought their incantation books and charms and burned them at a public bonfire.” So is there anything wrong with magic? Look at the story of Moses before Pharaoh in the Bible, Exodus 7:8-13, NIV. “The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “When Pharaoh says to you, 'Perform a miracle,' then say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh,' and it will become a snake." So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD commanded. Aaron threw his staff down in front of Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a snake. Pharaoh then summoned wise men and sorcerers, and the Egyptian magicians also did the same things by their secret arts: Each one threw down his staff and it became a snake. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. Yet Pharaoh's heart became hard and he would not listen to them, just as the LORD had said.”

Exodus 7:19-23, NIV. “The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt--over the streams and canals, over the ponds and all the reservoirs'--and they will turn to blood. Blood will be everywhere in Egypt, even in the wooden buckets and stone jars." Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded. He raised his staff in the presence of Pharaoh and his officials and struck the water of the Nile, and all the water was changed into blood. The fish in the Nile died, and the river smelled so bad that the Egyptians could not drink its water. Blood was everywhere in Egypt. But the Egyptian magicians did the same things by their secret arts, and Pharaoh's heart became hard; he would not listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the LORD had said.”

Exodus 8:5-7, NIV. “Then the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron, 'Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams and canals and ponds, and make frogs come up on the land of Egypt.' So Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up and covered the land. But the magicians did the same things by their secret arts; they also made frogs come up on the land of Egypt.”

Satan pretended to do the same things God was doing through Moses. Satan was doing more than tricks with his magicians under Pharaoh’s court. It is better to stay away from his ground!

What if it is just simple magic? Even if you think nothing is wrong with simple magic, it is creating a desire for that which Satan uses all the time. Sometimes it is hard to tell if the magic is coming from Satan or from the person. Look at this Bible verse. 1 Thessalonians 5:22, KJV. “Abstain from all appearance of evil.” By you staying away from magic, your good example could help someone else from getting involved in Satan’s magic.

Any book, game, cartoon, or movie that depicts someone casting spells, chanting, talking to the “dead”, fortune telling, reading tarot cards is wrong and you should not participate in it. These occult magic practices were clearly forbidden by God. Look in the Bible, Deuteronomy 18:9-13, TLB. “When you arrive in the Promised Land you must be very careful lest you be corrupted by the horrible customs of the nations now living there. For example, an Israeli who presents his child to be burned to death as a sacrifice to heathen gods, must be killed. No one may practice black magic, or call on the evil spirits for aid, or be a fortune teller, or be a serpent charmer, medium, or wizard, or call forth the spirits of the dead. Anyone doing these things is an object of horror and disgust to the Lord, and it is because the nations do these things that the Lord your God will displace them. You must walk blamelessly before the Lord your God.
