Where Did I Come From?
How can I know where I came from? You can find the answer in the Bible in Deuteronomy 4:32, NIV. “Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created man on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of?”
How did this world get here and how long did it take? The answer is in the Bible in Exodus 20:11, NIV. “For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” Did you find the answer – in six days plus the one day that God rested from doing work. That makes seven days to a week!
Just how did God create the world and everything in it? The answer is in Psalm 33: 6,9, TLB. “He merely spoke, and the heavens were formed, and all the galaxies of stars…For when he but spoke, the world began! It appeared at his command!” Wow! All God had to do was speak, and it was done!
So through whom did God create all things? The answer is in Colossians 1:16, NIV. “For by him (Jesus) all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.”
But what about humans? Did God make them too? This is a great question and you can find the answer in Genesis 5:2, TLB. “God created man and woman and blessed them, and called them Man from the start.”
Not only were you created by God, you were made in the very image of God! It’s in the Bible in Genesis 1:26, NIV. “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” That makes you so very special!
What job was man given to do? The answer is in the Bible, Genesis 1:26, NIV and Psalm 8:3-6, TLB. “Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth." “When I look up into the night skies and see the work of your fingers – the moon and the stars you made – I cannot understand how you can bother with mere puny man, to pay any attention to him! And yet you have made him only a little lower than the angels, and placed a crown of glory and honor upon his head.”
God has a formula for making man. It is dust formed by God + the breath of God = a living person (also called a living soul). It’s in the Bible in Genesis 2:7, TLB. “The time came when the Lord God formed a man’s body from the dust of the ground and breathed into it the breath of life. And man became a living person.”
Ever since the first man Adam, every person has been made by God. It’s in the Bible in Psalm 119:73, TLB. “Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands.”
You were shaped by God, wonderfully made. It’s in the Bible in Psalm 139:13-16, TLB. “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body, and knit them together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! It is amazing to think about it. Your workmanship is marvelous – and how well I know it. You were there while I was being formed in utter seclusion. You saw me before I was born and scheduled each day of my life before I began to breathe. Every day was recorded in your Book!”
God, your Creator, knows you very well. Your thoughts, your activities, your every move. It’s in the Bible in Psalm 139:1-4, TLB. O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit or stand. When far away you know my every thought. You chart the path ahead of me, and tell me where to stop and rest. Every moment, you know where I am. You know what I am going to say before I even say it.”
Do you think God even knows the number of hairs on your head? It’s in the Bible in Matthew 10:30, TLB. “And the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”
Because God knows you so well, He loves you and nothing can separate you from His love. It’s in the Bible in Romans 8:38,39, TLB. “For I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can’t and life can’t. The angels won’t and all the powers of hell itself cannot keep God’s love away. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, or where we are – high above the sky, or in the deepest ocean – nothing will ever be able to separate us from the love of God demonstrated by our Lord Jesus Christ when he died for us.”
